Fifteen years after the construction of our initial design, Stea was engaged to increase the retail space and the capacity of the departure lounge. The depth between the apron and the set down and car park did not allow much scope for extension. We converted the central concourse into a departure lounge and utilised a landscaped area landside to provide a ‘rain forest walk’ from check-in to security screening. This inexpensive solution didn’t increase the existing footprint of the building and eliminated the need for additional security staff. The walkway provided ‘queuing by stealth’ and a unique Sunshine Coast experience. The Sunshine Coast Airport received the Australian Airports Association (AAA) Major Airport of the year award in 2011 and 2012.
